Annette Cartman founded Do Something Awesome, a non-profit based in the Calumet district on Chicago’s far South Side. Also known as ‘The Awesome Lady,’ Cartman has organized community clean-ups in coordination with the 5th district police station, and coached the Alex Haley cheerleading team, but she is especially proud of having provided services to her community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, including a vaccination clinic in her home. She started Doing Something Awesome in 2012, and restarted it in 2019 despite suffering a personal loss. A mother and mentor, Cartman also uses her double-dutch jumping skills to connect with young people.
